Another Shade of Soul..

Posted in Music on November 21, 2007 by kdpr

From the time the Devon, England-bred Stone emerged on the music scene at age 16, the sultry singer crooned her way to the hearts of many critics and her peers including the respect of black audiences. She’s got this throaty and soulful sound that is unique and fresh, yet still pays homage to the greats. Stone was nominated for three Grammy Awards in 2005, including Best New Artist, and performed a memorable tribute to Janis Joplin with Melissa Etheridge at the ceremony.

The same year she appeared on every American late-night and morning talk show, and scored magazine features everywhere from Rolling Stone to Vanity Fair. In February 2006, she joined Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and India.Arie for the Super Bowl XL pre-game show, while on the night of the 2006 Grammy Awards, she appeared with Legend and Van Hunt singing a medley of hits by soul star Sly Stone. Their cover of “Family Affair,” which appears on the Sly Stone tribute album Different Strokes By Different Folks, has been nominated this year for a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group.”

Ms. Stone has been featured in GAP commercials and released her second single off her third album.  Some of my favorite songs off of ‘Introducing Joss Stone’ are,”Music”, “Bad Habit” , “HeadTurner”, and the Diane Warren penned, ”Brusied but Not Broken”.      I love Joss’s ability to grapple Ms. Warren’s words and bring them to life.

It seems the right artist get the right songs from Ms. Warren and Joss Stone’s, rendition of the heartfelt and empowering ballad is a prime example of that.   Overall, I’m highly impressed by the album and wished we had more music like this to blast on self-gifted car stereo systems. It’sFoo Fighters meets the Cranberries with ballads that are intimate and introspective and you have Dallas based band, Superstring. Commenced April 2005 from a project gone band during a late night jam session. Friends Julie Lange, Kell Curtis and Miguel Fair wrote a song about getting in the way of your own success called If You Want It which has taken them on a whirlwind ride to success.Band members Julie Lange (vocals), Kell Curtis (lead guitar), Miguel Pierre Fair (bass), Taylor Tatsch (guitar) and Cooper Hefley (drums) are finally catching up with their own momentum. Within 3 months, Superstring wrote, recorded and pressed its self-released album By All Means an intensely emotive collection that showcases the bands ability to combine melodic hooks with a heavy and powerful musical background.

“Although we put ourselves on such a short timeline to write new songs, they just flowed from us I think we just had so much to say,” explains Julie. What their creative flow produced is music that lets you get lost, just for a minute (Iceberg, Renegade Radio) helped along by Julies ability to channel the passion of each song directly to her audience. With emotion that can be sweet, angry, sultry, mesmerizing and everything in between, Julies vocal invites even the most obscure of listeners along for an intense yet ethreal ride. After the release of By All Means, Superstring embarked on a tour that has already taken them to some great heights, including a show at Nokia Theater in NYC on Broadway with The Click Five for the Cyberathlete Professional Leagues World Finals. The band was then featured on HDNets True Music on January 29, 2006 and was asked to return in July 2006 to release their HD music video (produced by Taylor’d Productions) to a nationwide audience. Most recently, the feature length film Bloodlines, starring Lou Diamond Phillips, (international release scheduled for Fall 2006) used two cuts from the album Scarred and Sanctuary for action scenes, as well as the trailer. Keep an eye out for their upcoming rockumentary Life on A String.

Somethin’ To Maren-ate On…

When a high school student sings, writes, and plays guitar in a way that has industry insiders begging to hear more of her, she is probably worth listening to. Those who do will quickly understand why Maren Morris has been garnering praise from critics in not just one, but several musical genres. Maren has been featured on numerous radio and television programs and has been headlining at notable venues throughout Texas. Maren finished in the finals of this year’s B.W. Stevenson Songwriters’ Competition, along with published songwriters many times her age.

She was runner up in the Texas 10 Under 20 contest at this year’s Dallas Guitar Show. Dixie Chicks producer and steel guitarist extraordinaire Lloyd Maines was floored by Maren’s voice in the studio recently, as she recorded her new CD. “This girl has everything it takes to make it,” said Maines. “She does vocal acrobatics most grown-ups can’t do,” said Tommy Alverson, of Una Mas Cerveza fame. Maren was chosen to attend the exclusive GRAMMY Camp, a nine-day intensive event that covers all aspects of the music industry. She was one of only 46 high school students in the nation to be chosen, and the only Texan to be part of the singer-songwriter specialty group. {For more information about Maren and to hear samples of her music visit her official site at:  www.marenmorris.com } “Young talent like this, that’s formidable with veterans in the music industry is worth buying their CD and supporting their live performances. Maren is truly talented!” :–Kandie Delley, Sidaei Entertainment

What Doesn’t This Cat Do?

Posted in The Beacon News on November 20, 2007 by kdpr

DFW transplant to Austin, rapper du’jour, Bavu Blakes has had a crazy ride to the top, slinging rhymes every step of the way. Most of you will remember a few years ago I was in awe of his lyrical prowess and delivery.  He and his hip hop brigade pined for the old school magic that used to swing heads and bodies back in the day while still staying competitive with a mix of the modern hip hop movement.

His PROUD MAMA, should be his publicist because she makes sure I’m in the know about his steady climb to fame and I’m here to put you in the know, that is, if you already don’t know.  Moving deeper into broadcast communication, (lucky cat- dude if I wasn’t so happy for him, I’d be jealous) with radio, TV credits, Bavu’s current gigs include a deal with Dell to hype his peeps about the ‘ ACL Music Fest on the Dell Stage? Hundreds enter, the Top 20 make it through and the Final 5 keep hope alive.

Along the way, the fans and the jury decide who stays and who goes.  In the end, only one band’s sound will be heard. Who’s gonna take the stage?

Imagine Living Healthier

Posted in Book Shelf on November 20, 2007 by kdpr

bcollins.gif  I enjoyed reading this book because it focuses on the ‘true’ elements of losing weight.  You can try any exercise regimen, meal plan, fad diet, or cleansing program but if your weight gain is tied to your emotions, self-esteem, spiritual needs or due to a lack of discipline and self-control, unless you identify and work on those root issues, very few weight loss plans will be successful.  Author Bridgette Collins takes you into the lives of 3 fictional characters going through life changes and weight loss with the help of a personal trainer based in
Dallas.  Through their experiences you can Imagine Living Healthier    For more information visit www.tulisoma.com or www.bridgettcollins.com  Review by : K. Delley
